My abstract/semi-abstract works are 2 and 3D weavings from a wide range of materials : wool, paper, rushes, twigs, coffee sacks, plastic from the sea etc.
They are often geographically specific, inspired by physical and spiritual journeys using materials collected along the way: Portugal, Australia, Finland, UK (East Anglia, Shetland, Orkney Dartmoor.)
I am also inspired by literature: Romantic Poetry (Claire, Keats, Coleridge) and Classical Myth.
Music is very important to me and I am working on a largescale coffee sack weave inspired by Britten’s Death in Venice the last in a series of four with accompanying weaves made from acrylic mono prints.
I am interested in the materiality of what I make including it’s decay and the seemingly autonomous nature of the materials that dictate the finished piece.
Most recently I have been experimenting with more open textures with visible warp and exploring the fragility of our world by using plastics scavenged from the sea.
I always work from memory: consequently any proceeds from the sale of my works are donated to dementia and mental health charities.
